| As far as the "lots of people fucking" notes about the TV show "Mad Men," I think this is probably realistic. Realize this is the early 1960s, we had a change in the sexual mores, and we now had The Pill and for the first time in centuries, venereal diseases were treatable and did not mean a death sentence or very painful and scarring treatments if even possible, the way it was as recently as the 1920s or 1930s if you caught Gonorrhea or Syphilis. A quick shot of penicillin if you got the clap or syph and it was cured.
Women discovered that they were allowed to be sexual beings and being a "good girl" did not mean you couldn't also screw if you wanted to. And men discovered the clitoris after ignoring it for virtually forever. Shere Hite did a survey back in the 1970s and discovered that women only experienced orgasm about 30% of the time from vaginal intercourse. So women could stroke themselves during sex or get the guy to fingerfuck them or eat them before having sex. So now women could really enjoy sex - as much if not more than men always have been able to - and also have reliable contraception. A change back in Mores - which occurs every 20 years or so - plus the AIDS scare, made sex a bit less open during the 1980s and 1990s. I saw it coming, the key indicator was when women started complaining that bathing suits were showing too much in the early 1980s. This was a clear indicator that the mores had started to shift back to being less open (but the ability to communicate easily and inexpensively meant things didn't go back to the way they did when things shifted the way they did from the 1940s to the 1960s). I realized the reverse change had occurred and we had become more open when kids were getting in trouble for "sexting" when young girls were sending pictures of themselves naked to their boyfriends and it was causing problems because the law, as usual, had not kept up with common practices, and girls who simply did something silly and stupid were now being charged with "distributing child pornography" for distributing pictures of themselves partially naked or filming themselves having sex with their boyfriend and having the video on their camera or computer. Sometimes you got a judge who had some common sense and realized that laws against child pornography are to protect kids from exploitation, not to punish them for doing something stupid like making naked pictures of themselves or recording when they were having sex. With the routine change in sexual mores happening around 2003-2005 plus the new drugs again turning fatal venereal diseases into just a health problem instead of a death sentence, we started to go back to the way things were nearer the 1960s. Finding a woman to have sex with is a lot easier now than it was back around 1995, although it's not as easy as it was circa 1973 because we haven't cured HIV or AIDS, they've just gone from being an inconvenience and a mess instead of a death sentence. Plus we had more "innocence" in the 1960s made things extremely open then. If we ever get a true cure for HIV/AIDS the way there was a true cure for syphilis and gonorrhea you'll see sexual openness skyrocket just as it did in the 1960s. Women like sex too, and they're usually only reticent when they have to worry about social pressures, pregnancy and/or disease. Get rid of all three and they tend to be just as interested in fucking as men are. |
