| The main reason I respected the show was how it was one of the only mainstream shows to offer a take on how maybe, in addition to being pissed at terrorists, we should be equally pissed at our own policy makers who authorize actions which inspire terrorism. It's only terrorism when it's a car bomb and not a hellfire missile. Too many people are more concerned with advancing their own political aspirations than acting rationally. Maybe Israel is run by a bunch of reactionary assholes after all?
They've not only completely abandoned that in season 3, but have taken the exact opposite stance. Saul orders retaliatory strikes based on shakey intel in order to score a two sentence bragging point in front of a committee which doesn't work anyway. Saul has a ridiculous outburst (sorry, Blob) in front of the only financial specialist/translator they have, feeding into the irrational "war of cultures" thinking he knew was wrong in the first two seasons. Saul, disgusted with how the wetworks director planned to deal with Brody, a self-admitted suicide bomber, is now buddy buddy and totally willing to throw his closest colleagues under the bus for less reason. He's become everything he said "fuck you" to about the agency from the previous seasons. If it's supposed to be some character change due to the CIA bombing, how did he become the most level headed person at the CIA following 9/11? In season 2, Carrie was committed for justified reasons. Now we have to sit through an exact recreation of those scenes after the CIA fabricated a reason to shut her up after they set her up to take the fall. The flimsy excuse is that Saul is trying to protect her from a hit by the wetworks director, but Saul runs the whole motherfucking agency now. Why not channel a fraction of that rage you have for headscarves towards the murderous scumbag wetworks guy? The entire season has been based on the premise that congress shutting down the CIA would be disastrous. So far, there's no reason to believe how that would be a bad thing. Every terrorist action has been blowback from CIA ops, the agency is carrying out assassins to score political points, and they lock up or kill Americans threatening to tell the truth how they've been screwed over. Worst of all, they keep justifying all this with the Langley bombing, which was arguably the most justifiable attack on a legitimate military target of the entire war on terror, way more so than drone strikes on residential neighborhoods. Even putting the politics aside, half the show is pointless filler now. There's no reason at all to care about or show Brody's family anymore, but they're featured cast members so we have to watch his daughter's adventures in flying over the cuckoo nest. Brody is shot and delivered to a third world doctor in surgery scenes that drag on ten times longer than they should. They're just eating up runtime now and abandoning the refreshing take from the first 2 seasons. I guess now I understand how people felt watching Dexter. |
