If you ever have the chance to watch the original version of Godzilla (not the watered down Raymond Burr version), I highly recommend it. The original was actually one of the great acts of subversive cinema in Japan because it was the first movie about the nuclear attacks on Japan to sneak under the censorship radar by pretending to be another goofball 50s giant radioactive monster attacks movies. It ain't. Godzilla is the Hiroshima nuclear blast in painful irresistable slow motion. It's a horror movie.

Then from the first sequel onward it turned into a goofball 50s giant radioactive monster attack franchise coasting on the original's greatness ever since.
