I'm going to lower myself into the shark tank that is Caltrops and go on record as liking Human Revolution. I've always liked science fiction, even really bad science fiction, just as long as it presented some interesting ideas, and HR did that. The whole augmentation thing was a great theme for a game, I thought. Obivously most gamers start off thinking that the pro-augmentation factions are in the right, but the game throws some conflicting ideas at you. What about the social inequality that augmentations would produce? The loss of control that happens when parts of you were made by a corporation? Dehumanization? etc. etc. So your choices later in the game are centered around how you feel about augmentations rather than whether you want to be Snidely Whiplash or Dudly Do-Right like in Fable or other games like that.
The problem was that questions like that were limited to overheard conversations and optional emails. My favorite point was challenging the voluntary nature of augmentations when companies start making it a requirement for employment and it turns into an arms race between workers.
Unfortunately, it's like the writers were divided into a smart A team who did stuff like that, and the Z team who could only cough up brain dead jRPG tropes. The A team was limited to the side plot while the Z team got the main plot. The very first cutscene is a modern remake of Double Dragon, and every single cutscene after that makes you want to punch Jensen for being an idiot.
My least favorite part of the game was the hacking minigame, which was hard to avoid and kind of tedious. I also thought that the inventory was way too small, even after upgrading it. But overall, I thought HR was probably the best sequel the original could have gotten.
That was my final opinion too. In the age of shallow big budget AAA titles, this was the best Deus Ex game we could have gotten. |
