It's just like the Wadjet Eye games, especially Gemini Rue - they don't really fit that well into a list of old games, but give people the feeling of playing one of them.
If anything, FTL and Primordia are made by people who feel retro games should have been deeper and prettier including the arcade sequences.
This is like the 'spiritual successor' chestnut that people go on about, Bioshock and SS2 (which was awful). I had a meltdown about Alpha Centauri and Pandora, but I should've just said that almost all conversation about spiritual successors is stupid and leads to bad places - the real lesson is building on successes and cutting out failures which they couldn't even do with the XCOM remake - is the XCOM remake retro to fans? The fans here describe it differently. Maybe 'retro' should be set aside as a topic and instead we should just do this:
some guy who poured a lot of hate and rage into XCOM: Enemy Unknown wrote:
Game design:
Have some fucking idea of what came before and what did and didn't work for the genre you are in. Every single game designer in the world should be able to speak to the specific case of why X-COM was a masterpiece and why Terror From the Deep sucked dick. Every single one - regardless if you are making iOS slop or console games or a game that is actually called XCOM.
Play every meaningful PC game from 1980 to 1996. The limitations in computing power and storage meant that creativity, design and an innate sense of fun had to grab a player's attention. A lot of developers and designers seem to think that having played every SNES game is the same thing. It is absolutely not, and the reason is because the NES, SNES and Genesis were all designed to try to make Donkey Kong Country. You can count the interesting games on those consoles that weren't sports or side-scrollers on one hand. The PC is the only platform that matters.
The FTL team made things that remind people of the past but don't necessarily improve on past games in significant ways. Fun enough the first playthrough I guess.

One of the few retro style games that would be improved by modern graphics. by jawo 01/17/2014, 9:37pm PST
Did you like it aside from that? NT by Kenji Carter 01/19/2014, 7:33pm PST

It's really tempting to describe anything that isn't bleeding edge as retro. by Worm 01/20/2014, 10:00pm PST
Or just being creative with limited resources to make a great game? NT by RetroRomper 01/22/2014, 9:58am PST

FTL is only retro when viewed through rose-tinted nostalgia goggles by stupid newbie 01/24/2014, 9:14am PST
