Not all of them, but that's the general sense for me. Baldur's Gate made a point of letting you talk at least a bit to every stupid peasant you came across, it had a broader field of view. The classic JRPG as I understand it has a narrow one, it takes you past great sights like a Tolkien novel with the slow parts cut out. JRPGs are theme parks.
Link's Awakening kind of sits in the middle but its focus on puzzles in an open world doesn't change the fact that characters in it primarily point the way rather than supporting a narrative (they do that, but secondarily) and the mechanics allow for a broader set of tools to get things done rather than just hitting harder for more HP. Tinkering to find new tactics that work in a world (Fallout 2) rather than hitting more things until everyone hits antagonists harder (FF7) has a different effect on me, one is a chore. As with the writing, the mechanics to support a world are richer, making investment easier. Classic JRPG adventures have always fallen flat for me because everything felt paper-thin. |

Maybe CRPGs let you visit a world, JRPGs take you on an adventure by stupid rookie 02/07/2014, 10:21am PST
