Well, it could be that and it could also just be a bad story.
For the record, I thought what I saw of just Shadowrun Returns was fine in terms of writing. There wasn't catchy phrases or nice turns of words or whatever, but I liked it. I didn't get very far in the game though and having never played the tabletop version of it (somehow) I would have missed all the awkward religious stuff. But from what I saw of SR, that's how games ought to be.
I also remember liking what I saw of Expeditions: Conquistador.
I played some game I got off an obscure bundle last night and the opening text was the developer saying that if you didn't give him money, maybe talk the game up to people willing to pay him for his hard work. Er, you're on Steam now, buddy, nobody is ripping you off.
