I found a lot of games I'd never heard of before. Great list. When did you compose it? It seems like it might be a few years old? But that is sort of a bonus. I like that it lacked Braid and Fez and such. I would love any other recommendations you have in the mean-time.
Thank you kindly! Yes, it is several years old. I kinda lost track of indie gaming between Xblah and alpha preordering turning the indie scene into a neverending sea of preview vids. The final straw was when I realized I'd set fire to 30 bucks by preordering Overgrowth.
However, I have bumped into a few other indie games of note since writing that article. Off the top of my head:
Aces Wild: I've described this elsewhere on the site. Hands down the best indie brawler on the PC.
Hammerfight: The most fun physics game I've ever played. All we really want to do with our physics engine is smash things. Be warned, like most russian games it's a tad buggy.
Ring Runner: A modern-day version of Star Control 2's combat system with an incredibly expansive ship customization model and an AI that can handle any type of randomly generated fighter. Be warned that the singleplayer campaign is paced very, very slow. To the point that the designers eventually patched the tutorial campaign to be half its length, and later made it entirely optional.
Noitu Love 2: A mouse-WASD game similar to Gunstar Heroes. I just wish the author added some kind of autofire option.
Drox Operative: This is the kind of clever design that made me fall in love with indie gaming in the first place. Several AI-controlled factions are engaging in a Master of Orion-esque 4X battle to take over a sector of space while you play a string-pulling Bene Gesserit pulling the strings in the background to alter the course of their war while posing as an elite mercenary ship. One of the best "living world" ARPGs I've ever played. The expansion is worth it.
Legend of Princess: A short, freeware tribute to Zelda 2 by the Noitu Love 2 guy that's huge fun.
FTL: Yes, it's over-hyped. Nevertheless it's still lots of fun and the game I wanted Weird Worlds to be. The sheer amount of bickering over the perfect strategy on this site should give you an idea of how much there is to sink your teeth into, and there's a free expansion coming out in a month or so.
Explodemon: This was overshadowed by the earlier release of 'splosion man. I really like it. It has mega man's looks, but feels more like Sonic the Hedgehog.
Defender's Quest: One of the more enjoyable and addictive tower defense games I've ever played, as each tower is an individual hero who gains experience and levels up through a skill tree, allowing you to make custom builds of each tower type to use in different situations.
Volgarr the Viking: People far more expert at arcade games than me have said this game is better designed than the ghouls 'n ghosts games that inspired it.
Knights of the Chalice: If you can get past the ugly visuals, this is one of the best, most challenging SRPGs on the PC today. Essentially a gold box Dungeons and Dragons game that takes your team of 4 heroes from level 1 to 20. I'm told that the crafting system breaks the game, so don't get those feats.
Gigantic Army: Japanese run 'n gun mech platformer similar to Cybernator and ported to English. |
