I haven't played the first two in a while, but it feels like they really fucked the combat this time by making it almost 90% defense (on Hard). In the first two games, you'd have critical ATTACKS, and mashing the button as fast as possible would break your combo. Here, there's only critical COUNTER, which is fine since the enemies wait exactly 0.5 seconds between taking turns attacking you one at a time. This means that for most battles, you'll just be standing around in the middle like an asshole occasionally pressing Y since any other strategy will get you kicked from behind, resetting your combo meter to 0. It should be that you're concentrating as much as you can on making your attack rhythm match up to boost your combo, while keeping alert for the occasional enemy to take a swipe at you. Every battle is frustrating.

The upgrade paths are COMPLETELY retarded since now you're FORCED to put 4 points into both melee and gun armor before you can get any of the good combat upgrades. What was wrong with the open upgrade board from before?

Even the collisions feel cheap. Arkham 1 and 2 you could FEEL the guys getting permanent brain damage and the final hit always felt fucking AMAZING. Origins feels like someone described the hits to the development team over the phone. There's no weight to any of it, so it just feels like you're beating up helpless, malnourished vagrants who occasionally fly up 1000 feet into the air.

The camera feels pretty bad here, too. It refuses to lock into fight mode until you've thrown at least 3 punches, so again you're better off just standing there waiting to press counter. Pretty glad I got this one on sale.
