I assumed the reason that one team keeps completely blowing the others out of the water is that people see their team ahead and go "ah, I'll contribute my points today, so I get the extra card and a chance at a free games", and if they aren't ahead they save their cards for when they will be. I know that's what I did.

It's possible that the reddit scheme kicks one team into the lead, and then it just snowballs from there.
