I bought Magrunner for $4.95 and while it is reminiscent of Portal, it's more like "The Hunger Games" using magnets instead of lethal weaponry. The backstory on this is you're competing against other Magrunners, and the winner gets a big reward. Also, your character is the only one who doesn't have a corporate sponsor and your trainer is a 6-armed mutant who communicates with you via a clandestine video feed when you're in the elevator between tasks.
While the idea is similar to Portal, you have a hand-held device that shoots two different fields, the fields it shoots are magnetic energy, not the ability to teleport between locations. As with standard N and S magnetic poles, two alike magnetic fields attract and two different ones repel. There is also a jump target which looks a lot like the flinging devices except it's not automatic, you charge it with one magnetic type, then put a cube on it, climb on top of the cube, then charge the cube with the opposite magnetic energy which causes the jump target to fling the cube (and you) in the direction it is aimed at.
The puzzles are fairly straightforward and do not require any unusual reach as in the case where the Portal gun allows you to teleport into areas you can't directly reach.
You can see walkthroughs for Magrunner on YouTube; I've had to use a few because sometimes the puzzle is a little too hard for me. If you look at those vs. walkthroughs for Portal or Portal 2, they're clearly two different game genres. |
