I don't know if you got here because you trawl your google results but on the off chance you're half-serious about any of your radical design goals and not just another damn fool who 'saw potential' in a dark hole like MoO3, I'll remind you of the things that are essential to differentiating CK2 from really any title in the EU series: CK2 is soulfully designed, anything can happen (like in Vicky), and it's about replay value rather than compulsive play.
The first point is better made here. Go learn UI design, it matters or we'd all be playing Aurora. There's a corollary here, and a few sentences even work in a substitution:
[quote name=sorry, FoK][Crusader Kings] - for its faults - is a great game because it creates a new, specific, imaginary place in our cultural imagination. Dwarf Fortress is a toy that helps us make up sad stories about fantasy SimCities. [The European noble courts depicted in CK2] is new real estate that you and I have both visited. It's as real as Castle Rock or the Nostromo.
The second point is that CK2 has the feel of possibility to it, not just because of the random factor but because it's not just about one type of gameplay. EU is about starting somewhere and getting bigger, and if Imperia does that it isn't going to get close to revolutionizing anything.
Finally, the game is not a straight-up grind for the sake of evoking 'just one more turn,' it isn't about compulsion play like a Civ title. It's about 'what if I start another game as these guys?' That may be no good to Pinback and the dragon chasing people who think the way he does but it's fine for the rest of us shut-ins. Right, Jerry?
Good luck, changing anything meaningfully in space empire games means uprooting a lot of old ideas. Drox Operative's perspective shift and StarDrive's automation are a start. Maybe you'll join them. |

MoO3's use of player attention as a bottleneck was incidental, this is (badly) by designed 07/08/2014, 11:55am PDT
