I really hated Game of Thrones the first time I started reading it, but I saw HGB and UWPP talking about it on Twitter, and they are people with good taste, plus hating something without giving it enough of a chance is something that I do and I know that about myself SO yeah. The books aren't as bad as I initially thought.
2 things that changed on a 2nd reading:
- I can picture characters as famous movie stars. This is the dumbest thing, but I think I am a lot more able to keep the characters straight when I can picture what they look like from the TV ads. Note that I have not seen a single episode of the show - nevertheless, when Tyrion Lannister walks in I'm all like OOH PETER DINKLAGE even though I'm reading a book. Dumb.
- I powered through the worst-drawn character in the book. Viserys Targaryen is hilariously over the top in his douchebaggery, and that was what made me ditch the book the first time. He is SO TERRIBLE. There's no suspended disbelief that hard, even in a book where the character's sister is a dragon sorceress.
So yeah, I came around on GoT like I did on Mad Men. You guys should really not trust me when I say I dislike things. |
