| Daedalic has become impossible to ignore because they're so prolific, but their games just aren't that great. Nice art, okay soundtrack and puzzles, and shit voice acting, characters and story. They're always a 4-6/10 games. Deponia had you playing some asshole and I didn't even finish the first game because he was such a douchebag. And I don't want to fucking here how it's satire of the adventure genre or some shit. It's not a valid excuse for making a trilogy of games with the same point that's probably been made in dozens of free AGS games that were 20 minutes long, which is the maximum this sort of statement should go on if it's not going to be fun to play. A New Beginning had potential with its eco plot but spent it all away with its stupid ass time travel shit and characters that aren't remotely internally consistent ("I have principles, dad! Now time to betray you", "I lied about almost everything but I change my mind and decided to help you instead, for no reason").
Chains of Satinav had an okay plot and puzzles but the protagonist is bland. His main love interest is a fairy who's innocent to the point of being stupid. I'm still not convinced that she isn't mildly retarded. And the game sidesteps some rather big subplots. Hey, is anyone going to mention how she's a fairy princess who ran away from her kingdom when the evil seer invaded and just let it rot? Are we supposed to overlook this massive avoidance of responsibility because she builds people out of vegetables and you want us to think it's cute? You guys going to go back to help fairy land now or is she just fine letting them live in a world where dancing and singing is outlawed and they worship a dead evil magician as a god? Okay, I guess we're not going back. At least it was pretty to look at. None of these are remotely recommended unless you're an adventure game nerd (like me) who's starved for more point and click games (which is all the time). Memoria is supposed to be their best game. If this is terrible I won't play another game by them. Unless there's a dry spell for a while and I catch up on my backlog, so it's still a maybe. |
