I took my car in for service last week. The bolts had come undone on the driver’s seat, but that’s not why I took it in. When I picked it up, I saw that bolts had been ADDED and I was not charged for the work. Getting free service from a dealer pretty much means you gained a level or they feel you’re going to get yourself killed. I guess they wanted to ensure I didn’t go flying out in an accident, buckled into the seat like Goose in Top Gun.

I bought the MiST FPGA board that does emulation of the Amiga, Atari ST, Atari 8-bit and others. I tried to plug a USB trackball into it and I brrrrricked it. Trackballs, I am your greatest champion and most influential user. I mean, I’m guessing - I haven’t seen another trackball user since 1983. Don’t brick my shit!

Since I have to send the MiST to Germany, I decided to get the “Satandisk” board going for my (non-emulated) Atari 520ST. I bought it well over a year ago hoping for “time” to use it. I tried Arkanoid, Lode Runner and Another World. I got garbled graphics for all of them! I’m zero for two using cool nerd shit this week.

The two systems not working meant that I started quoting the guy in this Youtube video. I realized that just saying his lines while living with someone, without giving her the context, means that she is going to think I am being serious. That I hate the place we’re living in, which I don’t. So we watched that video and she felt very bad for Brian. She told me I don’t have much empathy. But *my* take is that I am not mocking the guy, I am showing him respect by quoting him. I feel that’s probably a geek thing, showing respect by incorporating the speech of others into your own life. Also I have no capacity for empathy.

My new commute is five blocks, with 4-way stops on most of the intersections. I’ll start walking it every day eventually, but after a lifetime of commutes that have ranged from 90 minutes to an hour to 45 minutes and so forth, I’m enjoying it taking less than 3 minutes on a motorcycle. I’ve noticed that bicyclists **will not stop** at 4-way stop intersections. I’ve never seen one come to a complete stop after a month of this.

When I was finishing up Cryptozookeeper, I had zero ideas for the next game I wanted to make. I eventually thought up an RPG and I’m doing that. But in getting exposed to different platforms for game development, all these ideas are coming into my head. For instance, a horror-themed JRPG, an ACK adventure, a squad tactics thing in Unity, implementing the board game Clue or 221b Baker Street in Java or something. Does platform inspire game ideas? I feel I could work non-stop for the next ten years on indie games, if I could survive on 7,000 people buying them for $5 a piece, which I can’t. I bet that when real developers get real platforms like the new Xbox or Playstation, part of them thinks of all the awesome games they could make for it.

I recently got into Joy Division. It’s so weird that Ian Curtis killed himself so young. He was 23! A lot of you know this already, but it’s all new to me. He was suffering from epilepsy, depression and the mass effects of his medication as far as I can tell. Oh and he was married, which probably best explains the suicide.

Have a great summer, everyone.
