It's why black boys are given explicit instructions on how to behave when pulled over by the police- right or wrong. Not because our parents are trying to instill some deep values but because they knew our lives would be at stake.
That's a great blog post and everybody should read it. It talks a little bit about "Christians" but substitute your own religion or justification-for-being-an-atheist and it will be equally valid.
My personal feeling: It's sad that the term "white guilt" became some conservative punchline and not a very real discussion point in the conversation about race. I feel like the conversation has gotten off track, including in the article I linked.
Here's a thing about me: I hit it off with some people and I don't hit it off with some people, and I don't bother making it work with the 2nd set of people. I make some kind of joke that offends them (usually) or I just never feel comfortable around them (pretty girls), and it becomes clear to me that we will never have an open line of communication, and I don't bother trying. I write it off: you can't be friends with everybody, it's ok. When I encounter a black stranger, I feel like I've already made the offensive joke, and we can never be friends. The joke was: I was born in a middle class family that got middle class because white people were allowed to have good jobs 100 years ago, and LOL your grandparents weren't allowed to use the same bathrooms as my grandparents.
This is a silly venue to admit anything personal to anyone, but it is an important thing, so consider yourselves the equivalent of starting a Broadway show out of town: the thing I wish all black people knew about most white people is that we don't think of you as fundamentally inferior and undeserving of what we've got. It's that #1: we're embarrassed by the situation, #2: we are afraid of you because you have a right to be legitimately angry and #3: we really really hope that we don't have to give up what we've got.
I am super prejudiced! My prejudice about black people is that I imagine they have experienced a lifetime of discrimination and they will understandably hold it against me.
If you tell a kid that they did something bad, the first thing they will say is that they didn't do it. The 2nd thing they'll say is that it's somebody else's fault. The 3rd thing they'll say is that what you're saying is unfair because someone else is allowed to do what they did. They say all these things out of embarrassment. I feel like racism, and the results of racism, are - a lot of times - due to that embarrassment and the panic that white people feel that they will lose... something... if they lose the argument and have to admit that they are in the wrong. It's one thing to admit that black people have got it pretty tough and another thing to say it's ok if black kids with worse SAT scores get to jump in line ahead of my kid in college admissions. I know that it's fair. I'm just embarrassed and hope I can get away without any consequences.
I think this is important when looking at these dickheads over in Ferguson with their riot gear and their machine guns: My guess is that deep down, these guys don't feel that black kids are worth less than white kids and that it's ok to shoot them. They feel like they desperately need to protect the status quo because the alternative is admitting that the American system is fundamentally racist and that they and people like them would need to make big, big changes to fix that, and - out of embarrassment and childishness - they're hoping that they can get out of it, and historical evidence suggests that they will totally succeed at getting out of it. |
