Picked up Sword of the Samurai from GOG after he mentioned it in the Dragon Commander discussion.

Surprisingly playable and enjoyable for a 25 year old PC game, especially considering that hardly any other games have done a similar concept since. I love the office politics rivalry between other lords as you try to choke down the shame of marrying a total cow because you needed an heir breeding factory ASAP. Even the rough action sequences are still kind of fun.

The big flaw though is the army battle mini-game, which unfortunately grows increasingly dominant as the game goes on. It's dull, clunky, makes very little sense how one unit beats another, and cavalry is fucking invincible. Even worse, it's impossible to tell how your army stacks up against a rival army until the battle starts. WORSE THAN THAT, it's always an instant game over if you lose even one defensive battle, even if you control half of Japan. The AI always sits still while on the defense, so contrary to all military logic you always have a massive advantage as the attacker, making the winning strategy to always attack others before they attack you. Not only do you get a massive advantage attacking, but even if you lose it's not game over like a defensive battle.

They desperately need to remake this game with all the rough parts smoothed out. Slap on a Dune-esque setting of constant Byzantine backstabbing.
