Actually, since the problem was me being a retard, I guess the problem is still at large!!! LOOL (hint: do not try to patch an already patched game, it fucks your install)
I like this game. I really bought just because it was cheap, but there's a better reason to buy it: turn based combat. I'm no turn based snob, but this plus 3rd edition rules (especially attacks of opportunity) really makes combat 50x more interesting than real time Baldur's Gate/NWN/Icewind Dale combat. In retrospect NWN really blew it big time. It's way more fun to micromange a single character in turn based, I'd be all over that shit if it was turn based. Turn based. Yeah. On the downside, every time someone opens their yap I hate this game. Holy shit, the cheesemaker's daughter can't find a man, will I find her one? No, fuck you, and die. Fortunately it seems you can just skip that crap and fight low level creatures in the wilderness for early experience, which plays upon the game's great strength, turn based combat.
Erik calls the random encounters "Monster Manual Video Poker," which is apt.

I'm unsatisfied with my current party (they're ~lvl6 at the temple of evil) so of course I'm aborting that game and starting over. Here are some questions:
Is there any reason to complete those Hommlet quests other than some free riskless experience? They're intensely boring and I'd rather not.
Eh, some items and gold (use diplomacy to jack up the rewards). Stuff like +1 swords, earmuffs of Elvenkind. There's a quest involving traders, and after you finish it, it ends without the evildoers attacking you. They just stand their shaking their fists at you or something. Kill them, the game doesn't care, and loot their bodies for some decent stuff (1,500+ experience, Chain Mail +3, Leather Armor +1, an Amulet of Non-Detection, (Sell it for 20,000 gold) a pair of Shortswords +1, and a pair of Daggers +1). They aren't that tough to kill, either, since you can position yourselves around them and attack first, a rarity in this game.

Are monks gay? They seem gay. Fucking die all the time. My fighter carries practically every melee singlehandedly.
There's always some clown who claims he can beat BG2 soloing as a Beastmaster or whatever, so I'm sure somebody swears by monks. I don't, the levels you play in this game are too low.

Are druids gay? They seem gay. Their offensive spells don't seem much better than a cleric's and they lose a lot of melee capability.
Druids are totally straight, man. I use one (mostly for the silly Druid hat). Since hallways are so narrow, arm your Druid with a spear or something long and have her stand behind your fighters (she can attack from that point). Druids have more offensive spells, and some decent area effect spells like Entangle which come in handy.

Are those crafting feats worthwhile?
If one of the patches fixd it properly, yes. Craft Wondrous, Magic Item/Armor, Brew Potion, these are good. Craft wand/rod are good, if you're feeling randy. |
