Maybe I just wasn't playing at a high enough level, but I didn't think the multiplayer was as bad as he said.

Couple things:

It wasn't all about the victory points. It was all about the power nodes. Keeping the other team's generators down was crippling. The resource points didn't really increase your income that much and an early victory point deficit could be easily caught up once your higher power income let you crush their army.

That FUCKING Capital Spires map was the worst and thus, the most popular map.

Okay, multiplayer did suck during the godlike tactical marine days.

What it really suffered from was Relic's usual RTS shortcoming: total lack of useful feedback. No helpful numbers behind anything (remember finding out that the Warboss's tier 1 hammer was stronger than his more expensive tier 3 power klaw?) made it hard to form a strategy on what was worth building at any particular point.

Also I'm not sure why he's holding up Company of Heroes as the game that avoided these shortcomings. Starting unit spam was even more rampant in that game. High level games rarely moved beyond pioneer rushing.
