When you right-click on a unit, its movement range is highlighted in white, melee-threatened hexes are highlighted in purple, and circles are drawn inside the hexes to indicate the unit's ranged attack distance from the hex they're standing on. I agree that they should color those range circles to more clearly indicate where the range penalties cut off. In the meantime you can inch forward hex-by-hex until you reach optimum range.

The lack of feedback spills over into everything else. I attack an enemy from 3 different directions, 1 of which is directly behind him, and I never get a flanking bonus...why?


When a unit is "defending" (indicated by a floating shield icon) they can't be flanked that round. Also, if you haven't attacked in a round, you can change the unit's facing by dragging from their hex out with the right mouse button.

My tier 2 cavalry loses a 1on1 to a tier 1 irregular because of "overwhelm". What the fuck?


Dunno based on your info. Usually it's cavalry that get the overwhelm ability. What races were they?

The other annoyance in combat is that it uses action points but it's still got one foot in the "move then attack" approach. You get action points but attacking always drains every last action point. Supremely annoying when you only need 1 attack to finish off an enemy but it takes your entire turn anyway. It makes even less sense with spells where you can move then cast, but not the other way around.


I think this is a non-sequitor, this isn't a hallway-shooter like X Com where you need to be able to fire then duck behind cover, and move-attack is how HOMM works, save for harpies. It also makes for clear delineations between types of ranged weapons. Crossbows do less damage than bows, but they still hit for full damage no matter how far the unit moved, while bows can do more damage provided the archer doesn't have to move too far this round. Spells have unlimited range.
