It's better than the other Master of Magic clones I've tried, but they've all been terrible bores so I'm not sure that's saying much.
It's basically the combat of Fallen Enchantress/Age of Wonders, but a little better, meets the strategic portion of Beyond Earth (an almost exact match), but a little better, with the custom unit construction of Fallen Enchantress, but...exactly the same.
2 things I like about the combat more than Age of Wonders:
1. Battle takes place on the actual map terrain tiles as the one tile army automatically spreads out into individual units. No sudden surprises of being fucked chokepoints or special battlefield effects of AoW. You can even issue strategic orders during battle.
2. Streamlined turns. You give each unit a target along with "advance" or "don't advance", then click "GO" and it automatically and quickly plays out 6 rounds before asking for orders again. It's a nice balance between the one unit at a time approach which got tedious in anything but the most decisive battles, and the autobattle approach where you took unacceptable casualties to the AIs idiocy. Reminds me of how Suikoden's traditional jRPG combat just had everyone go at once.
Can't really comment on how the strategic portion or balance plays out long term yet. |
