I wonder if the obsession with VR is like the film industry's obsession with 3D with the same result - the public never reaches the enthusiasm that they hoped for.
Even if they meet that enthusiasm it's so easy to burn out a gimmick. How can VR be important, and not just another toy to mug your face with? I'm not even 30, and this oversaturation is getting to me.
I watched a few more videos:
They're most compelling arguments were to change the way buildings or objects are designed. Or at least marketed. In fact, I can see people whose job it is to sell, like realtors, loving this. Expose the customer to 20 home tours in a day instead of 2. There's also one about people far away communicating to change the plans of a building site, which I guess could work, but I don't see that removing the need for physical presence. Museums might get some mileage out of this as well. So, I can think of some actual uses in industry or education. But consumers? If all they got is notifications and looking at bones and moving non-functional robots, the price will have to drop to low triple digits before it becomes a standard anywhere. And I hope it doesn't. So much of work and life revolves around screens and connectivity, the public may burn out on it, like you said.
