Rogue System is DCS in space, in Early Access, and astonishing. by pinback 06/12/2015, 7:40pm PDT
If you read the words "DCS in space" and knew what that meant and were at all intrigued, immediately go to http://imagespaceinc.com/rogsys/ and plunk down some cash for whatever EA tier you're comfortable with.

If not, read on as far as you want:

Rogue System is a hardcore space combat/flight simulator in very early access. When you first see the screenshot, you will say (as I did) "Yeah, but who needs an Elite clone now that we have Elite again?" Let's answer that question with screenshots.

Here, look at this screenshot of the cockpit in Elite: Dangerous:

A beautiful thing, no doubt. Now, you can see some of the HUD and the little holographic screen there, which is cool. But below all that, look at all those blinkin' lights and buttons and random doohickies! They look nice, and give you a little flavor of having to operate a fancy ship with fancy buttons and fancy levers (and a first-aid kit.)

Now look at this Rogue System screenshot.

Certainly not nearly as pretty, but yeah, you got your HUD there, and you got your little TV screen, and you got your fancy blinking lights. Except here, every single one of those does something, and you have to know what they do to properly fly the thing.

The current EA version is little more than the tutorial missions, so let me put it this way: The first tutorial mission took me about 30 minutes to complete, and you never actually get to fly the thing yet.

I know we're all tired of EA, but if you like this sort of thing, or have ever dreamed of this sort of thing, this is it, and this is as close as we're going to get for a long time, so please go give the guy money.

Incredible.

I'm a private pilot, or at least used to be. My favorite part of flying was flying. But my favorite part of Flight Simulator was skipping all of the handholding up front, starting from the hangar, following the correct startup procedures, following the correct ATC procedures, doing all of your pre-flight and runups, because then when you got in the air, you really felt more like you were flying than if you just hit "0" when it plopped you onto the end of Meigs Field runway 36.

For anyone who knows what I mean, and loves space games, well, here you go.

(And yes, I know everyone is already calling it "DCS in space". What else can you call it?)
