MS needs an interface Nazi with the ability to change shit across teams by Entropy Stew 07/30/2015, 9:33am PDT
Was Windows 7 the last MS UI that was internally consistent? Internally consistent by Microsoft's standards, I mean. It makes later versions of windows looks like a pot luck of UI components.

The Ribbon: It wasn't good at launch in Office. It wasn't good when I got used to it. It isn't good now.

The new (compared to win 7 at least) settings menu: This is tolerable, and looks like an attempt to be mac-like. Of course, all settings are not exposed via this UI. We can't have that. Anything that doesn't fit in one page just drives you over to the control panel. The UI itself seems like it was poorly rendered via html. It's not very information-dense, and looks to be touch-centric.

Multiple desktops: Finally! Win+Ctrl+Right/Left to shift over. The animation give me a tinge of motion sickness, though, making it the first new Windows feature that has literally made me nauseous. While the Win 8 start menu made me want to throw up, it did not induce vertigo.

Start menu: A cluster of fuck, yet still a vast improvement over 8. It actually looks good, even if it isn't.

Search bar: why is this taking up a third of my task bar? Hidden. Also turned off web search - I don't fucking need that when I'm not in a browser.

Search in general: A regression from Windows 7. I used to be able to hit the win key to open the start menu, then type "add rem" to get the add/remove programs control panel bit to pop up. NOT ANYMORE! What I get is "Add or Remove Device" and nothing else. The fuck? If I type "Add or", then Add or Remove Programs pops up as #1 with several other matching options, including Add or Remove Devices. The fuck?

Chrome: UI chrome, not the browser. I miss translucent window dragbar areas. The sea of white at the top of windows looks like shit.

IE Edge: They almost nailed this. What's there is a really solid core with some interface niggles. I specifically hate the url bar being auto-hidden on new tabs with a search box being down in the middle of the page. The fuck? Back to the good - it's goddamn fast. Google's Octane 2 javascript benchmark scored higher on Edge than Chrome. Wow! With a good set of plugins, this could have serious legs. I really can't believe how good of a job Microsoft has done with this.

Installer: Part of the weird new MS school of design where it's just some Text floating around on a page semi-randomly. The activity-indicating series-of-balls-flocking spinner is really annoying. Does Apple have a spinning circle patented? Also weird is the slowly pulsating background brightness. Why is my computer trying to hypnotize me? They also tried to give the install process some personality in a Mac-like way by saying "Hi". The whole thing comes off as an amateurish ripoff of Apple. Might as well have an animated gif of the Dell kid saying "DUDE" then skating away on his heelys. Functionally, the upgrade worked really well, with only minor issues on booting into 10. So, good job on that.

All in all, the Interface Nazi would probably fuck everything up, but fucking it up consistently across the entire OS might still be a usability win. Unless they decided to make it Ribbon OS.
