It's getting a lousy reception on steam, but they're assholes.
Strange Adventures in Infinite Space is the original "Starflight" coffee-break game and the inspiration for FTL. Its sequel, Weird Worlds, was more like an enhanced edition, and part 3 is an even more enhanced edition with a 3D engine and pretty much all of the blatant balancing issues of the previous games fixed. Their art guy died, and the replacement doesn't have the flashy colorful style of the previous games, but the music is a zillion times better.
Yes the 3D starfield is more difficult to navigate than the previous games, but the fact that it's 3D makes a huge difference in gameplay terms. You'll never be trapped in a corner by the nebula, and you can return home for ship upgrades without wasting valuable time because it can easily be a stop on transit.
You can still get fucked by the RNG, but that's a comparatively rare experience; and since each game is finished in a half-hour or less it's not rage-inducing like late-game RNG shenanigans in FTL.
I'm gonna write a frontpage review this weekend. |
