The RNG can be cruel, but I actually find the randomness to be far more manageable in this game than FTL or Ironcast because you can mitigate the effects of bad rolls using provisions without spending an action. Unlike FTL, the consequences of retreating aren't that bad. And unlike Ironcast, the RNG will not deny crucial weapon upgrades and leave you without options.
The one resource in this game that is infinite and inexhaustible is the stream of new recruits. In keeping with the grimdark setting, it seems the early game consists of treating your heroes as disposable and using them to gather heirlooms to upgrade the hamlet, sending them home once they become too unhinged and diseased to be of any more use, provided they survive. Until the hamlet is cheap and effective enough to upgrade and maintain a core group of veterans, all the money goes to precious provisions to maximize heirloom recovery.
Love the graphics. Too bad torchlight plays such an essential role in this game, if they went with a crazy Suspiria color scheme I could say that The Dark Spire is finally obsolete. |
