After reading Weapons and You: Blowing Stuff Up 2.0 By AnemoneMee on the steam community page, I realize I need long range missile boats, laser attackers, and heavily armored kinetic assault boats with thrusters to send them up close asap and to absorb damage from the enemy and protect the guys behind em. TL:DR, Missiles fire slow but have long range, laser fire at a medium rate and have medium range, and kinetic machine guns have a high rate of fire and short range. Thrusters send your big ships (don't bother putting them on small ships) into battle quicker and create separation between support and assault ships.
Note that your ships don't go up in levels (although the idea of hero units has been suggested), so those assault ships with heavy-ish defenses is my attempt to keep everyone alive, or at least everyone but the assault ships. :( Poor dumb bastards.
I like carriers, but it's hard to make decent ones until late in the game. Early guys have just 2 fighters each, which is a pretty chimpy carrier loadout.
I try to build a shipyard on every manufacturing planet before the first wave of factory upgrades. Make the shipyards fairly early, because the military vs social production slider is global, and if you can't make military stuff, those points are wasted.
I buy an SWACS (or sensor ship -- a cargo hull with 3 hyper drives, 5 life support and 5 navigational sensors) early to explore the crap out of the neighborhood. Later I upgrade that guy -- and make several more -- with survey modules to get the undefended anomalies and to keep an eye on the border. That way none of my warships need to worry about sensors, that role has been offloaded to a fleet of cargo guys. The AI is clever and I see them using my actual sensor ship design sometimes! (I haven't differentiated my ship style from Terran yet so any race using the Terran ships can use my custom ships, and I see my stuff flying around the galaxy.)
Get those defended ship graveyards asap. Apparently the AI doesn't get them currently, but this is your best way to get a primitive navy early in the game. I upgrade my survey ships later to make them a bit better at killing pirate defenders.
Economy starbases to upgrade your shitty economy/production points! Military starbases to help win what are too often really very difficult battles! |
