There's not enough longevity in it, not enough complexity in the building chains to warrant it. You could arguably have made this for iOS/Android and run it on a tablet with some voxel or 2D art instead of 3D graphics and nothing would have been lost. You're mainly watching the supply/demand and inventory tickers on the left side of your screen, making sure your supply chain doesn't go negative.
It's next to impossible to impose a horizontal monopoly since there's abundant spots to plonk down resources, and also the players aren't the only source of commodities -- so at any given time you're still playing with an AI "open market" that you can buy from if you're short on supplies. Yes, it costs you more and your cashflow might suffer a bit, but just build a few power stations to offset it. Selling power on the open market is your main source of cashflow early on and can just be built up up up with upgrades. It feels like this would have been a more interesting design choice and victory strategy than just "Buyout your competitors for 2x their total stock valuation". |
