I'm still plugging away at this. I don't think I like it! by Dream Cast 04/17/2016, 3:16am PDT

The levels are really more like puzzles than your typical shooter, there are a lot of hidden scripted triggers. Lots of trial and error.

This probably accounts for a lot of what I don't like about Perfect Dark, since I've never been a fan of those trial and error puzzles you only really find in video games. There's one in the first level where you have to make an office worker input his password into a computer terminal, which you do by pointing your gun and escorting him very slowly out of his office to the elevator, riding down a floor, getting out and escorting him again very slowly to the office with the computer in it. Then as soon as he inputs the password, he locks the system permanently, failing the mission and making you start the whole thing over from the beginning. Which, fair play, is a pretty reasonable spy movie complication for you to have to deal with, and knocking him out with the butt of your gun in that brief window AFTER the password but BEFORE the lockdown is pretty satisfying when you finally get to DO it. But as game design, it's just a little bit shit, isn't it? There's no way you could've known to knock him out in the first place, and even if you did the game could've just as easily failed you because you needed him conscious to abort some automated lockdown instead. Why couldn't he just raise an alarm? The mission gets harder - and your speedrun time or whatever goes out the window- but you still get to carry on without doing the whole miserable sequence over again?

I suppose that's the problem: I've already decided the game is miserable, so I'm looking for reasons not to have to keep replaying it. I'm working on Perfect Agent difficulty now, after finishing Special Agent, and I'm still not comfortable with the controls. I think whatever bizarre 1:1 analog mapping they used for precision aim mode (and the weapon select wheel) is just inherently UNcomfortable, at least on an Xbox 360 pad. Maybe it was better on the N64? I don't know, because I didn't play any N64 games because they all looked like a boxy blurry baby slideshow. They were probably all really good, though.

And even if the aiming worked, the enemies (there's really only one enemy, guy with a gun, which could possibly be acceptable if he were as smart as the guy with a gun from FEAR (he's not)) are too thin to draw a proper bead on, nothing like the big square hulks of hitbox you find in other console shooters like Halo or Gears. Which makes sense, given the corridors in Perfect Dark are so much narrower - and shorter, and mazier, and covered in the same repeated textures, and full of light sources so blindingly bright that I honestly thought it was a bug until I saw them in screenshots of the original, and there's no automap, and now I'm just listing reasons why I can't play this game without wanting to hurl.

I bet the story's pretty great, I'm definitely going to sit through the cutscenes at some point. Apparently there's aliens? What the fuck is that about?
