So a couple months ago I took up one of their usual free 10 day resubscribe offers. Found a one year old e(ve)-email from an old corps mate of mine offering to join his new corps ever since our old corps stopped being fun and went full on serious.
So I joined, which was right in the middle of what was dubbed "World War Bee", or the entire game teaming up to destroy Goonswarm and their coalition (multi-alliance group dubbed "The Imperium").
I'm not the foremost EVE historian, but I think the history went like this:
- Early in the game's history, corps grew into even larger groups called alliances, which grew into even larger groups called coalitions. One of the first coalitions that stuck around was B.O.B (Band of Brothers). They became the dominate force in the game.
- Something Awful goons start Goonswarm, with the basic philosophy of taking in every new player who applies (most corps are very closed and invitation only) and throwing tons of super cheap ships to overwhelm more expensive ships (ships and equipment that are 20% better usually cost 100 times more). This let them grind down a lot of opponents.
- Goonswarm eventually destroys B.O.B, marginalizes a lot of crazy Russian groups who were the secondary powers.
- Goonswarm/Imperium by far largest group in the game. Goonswarm leader "The Mittani" begins building his cult of personality. Quits real life job to fully live off income of his "EVE media empire" which was half Goonswarm propaganda and half holding out the donation plate. Sets up a tribute system where smaller groups pay him for the privilege of existing. Imagines himself a real Byzantine emperor. Is quoted as saying, "Our enemies are all playing Counterstrike. We're playing Crusader Kings."
- Not clear on the exact events, but something about a mix of Mitanni starting a kickstarter scam (to publish a book on the history of the largest EVE war, no doubt more Goon propaganda) and Goonswarm defrauding an out of game EVE bank/casino website. The bank/casino pulled an Iron Bank and began spending massive amounts of money to hire and fund groups to declare war on the Goons/Imperium. As this picked up, the remnants of the old coalitions that the Goons destroyed joined in. Entire coalitions began the process of moving all their assets to Goon space for the war. Anyone who's played the game knows what a fucking logistics headache that is, so you can imagine how pissed people were at Goons to undertake this.
- World War Bee becomes the largest war in EVE history. Not sure why Goonswarm collapsed when they had so decisively won all previous wars. It could be that Mitanni's power trip purged any good fleet leaders and only left the morons buying into the cult of personality (holy fuck their tactics were dumb when I saw them). It could be that the new class of strategic destroyers utterly wipe the floor with small frigates (way moreso than the old regular destroyers), rendering their traditional cheap frigate spam ineffective. I dunno.
The war is ended, and The Imperium has completely dissolved, and the Goonswarm alliance itself has been completely kicked out of nullspace. They've been reduced to living in a low security station that is camped by instant locking ships 24/7. The most they can manage is sending out the occasional "sword fleet", a bunch of interceptors that are fast and very hard to catch and can take down mining ships or lone ratters (players blowing up NPC pirates for bounty money) but not much else. The sword fleets positively melt when they run into the new strategic destroyers (which are largely acknowledged as largely overpowered right now).
So it's soothing to see Goon players dying off along with the Something Awful site.
Also I don't even have to pay for a subscription any more. You can use in game currency to buy 30 day subscriptions for around 900 million. That's normally a ton of time spent grinding shit and fuck if I'm going to spend 30 hours a month on that. They recently released skill extractor and skill injector items. You use an extractor suck out around one week's worth of skillpoints from a character to create an injector, which is used to inject those points into some other character. You make a 350 million profit off of this so I can play for free as long as I accept only getting one week's of skills every month, which is fine for me since the only place left for my character to go is flying capital ships and fuck that 2nd job OCD shit.
I'm essentially playing for free by donating blood. |
