There's a frontpage article on Caltrops about how the original M&M didn't hold your hand and people should stop having panic attacks and try for the reward, and you're coming at me with 'oh there's no tutorial so most people can't handle it so its value is lessened 8)' as if that diminishes my enjoyment. I've already won here, I know how to be entertained by this game permanently, thank you for embellishing my victory with your indication that you need training wheels where I just get on and ride. I agree you are a lesser man.
Maybe the standard for a worthwhile use of my time doesn't need to come from every 'hardcore' gamer playing middlebrow shovelware and screaming about their need for a how-to guide when they wander into deeper waters. Maybe the mass market, where tutorials matter, doesn't know best when it comes to gameplay. The indie designers that experiment with it mostly end up catering to a niche anyway. Even if a truly effective designer knows how to sell a product to sustain a business to reach a point where he can experiment, that hasn't always produced good tutorials and it's certainly produced bland horseshit like Fallout 4. Paradox does fine for sustained sales incidentally, on the whole their niche doesn't want handholding.
There's a class of games where you pour in work and get not a lot to show for it and there's a class that repays it in months to years of entertainment. This isn't just grand strats, there's esports and MOBA games in that category. Not all of them are good at tutorials, but sometimes design gets into zero-sum logistics, a dollar or a man-hour thrown to one feature means less somewhere else. If you offered me a decent tutorial versus all development resources poured into the experience I'd rather a game stood on its gameplay to the exclusion of all else. Maybe it's the important feature, it has 'game' right in there. There should be a list thread about the long-term reward games on Caltrops. We certainly have every other kind of list. |
