HL2 and FF7 also were repeated answers.
The raving praise FF7 received on release was fully deserved. That game changed peoples freaking lives, a true masterpiece. It has, however, aged incredibly poorly. Retrogamers will be met with a hideous mess (dem early PSX graphics ohhh lordy), compared to older 2D titles. FF7 is kind of a unique case in that way.
Many of the original FF7 fans had never played a FF game before, being introduced to the franchise (and consoles in general) via the Playstation, which was THE console in Europe back then. Sony's bizarre, 90's-friendly marketing of the system really secured consoles a place in the main stream, not just toys for nerdy kids anymore. The Playstation was street as fuck.
So it wasn't just the game itself, it was the whole edgy milieu surrounding the Playstation and the mid/late 90's. While early psx graphics may look hideous now, running that shit on a 4:3 Sony Trinitron CRT was pure joy. Life was good.
The truly overrated FF games were 8 and onwards. The spell was broken by then. |
