It's fun watching the Gallaghers' white trash mooching and schemes, like when William H. Macy needs a liver transplant so he tries to get on the good side of the daughter he never met by bribing teenagers with a joint to punch his grandson in front of her so he can swoop in and play the hero.
Every "wacky" character who isn't a Gallagher is an insufferable cartoon, like the "wacky" girl who gives blowjobs under the table when someone talks about algebra, or her "wacky" father who throws promise ring parties, or the "wacky" mother who's a shut in house wife with a wacky collection of sex toys, or the wacky neighbors with their wacky sex life and wacky anti-circumcision activism.
The show is hugely improved if you skip every scene without the Gallaghers. This also goes for skipping every ill-fitting dramatic scene that comes along whenever things get too up and up so they can reset the status quo. |
