Per Zseni's request, so you-all can see the other stuff php sites can do, I put one up at bostonnine.com.

Pop over, try out the weird features, make a user account (nothing is barred anonymous users, but each user account has thier own little space for things), make a blog, a wiki page, an article, comment, discussion, etc. I'm secretly nto an actual genius, but I see software a lot like the way I see games: I like the idea that people when given a little wiggle room will make their own fun. This is kind of why I talked about negative space in games, why I liked Morrowind and BG2, and why I prefer these pluggable apps to straight up development. So many other people have done so much work already, it'd be a shame not to make use of it. Zseni wanted something malleable to test out, and so I'll help her/you-all see software the way I try to see it: I largely focus on potential utility and not present limitations.

This is not software to replace caltrops in any way shape or form. It is bloaty and heavy on a server. If it was running a site like caltrops and was slashdotted or something it would go down in milliseconds. It simply has so many features that you can look around at them then pop back here and ask questions about how to use them or request features for caltrops. Ask for help there or her ein this forum, ask for new caltrops features in Site Comments. I know different software that does each thing that tikiwiki does, so presumably you wouldn't be asking for much work on the part of admins here if they were to add a given feature to caltrops (or not, I'm not really invested in it one way or another, I'm just saying I know you can tack any given feature on to this place if you choose your software wisely.)

It's just a test site, and like all my test sites, it will be taken down and replaced with other test software eventually. For now, however it makes a good place for you to try out different features that could work here, too, even if the wiki part isn't your thing.

...pathetically enough, yes this is what I do for a living. I don't design websites, but I sit in on developer meetings, listen to what they're planning, then beat them to it using free software instead of the sorry oracle/java crap they make. They hate it because I make them look bad and I'm "repeating their work," but the CIO likes that they have a little competition, and that I can develop circles around their two dozen dev staff. If your highly specialized and ultra-secure applications can be made to look bad by a 20 something english/philosophy major, I figure you got it coming. Of course, I don't have 25 years of legacy code to maintain, either, so I get an unfair advantage there, but I save them all kinds of money, and if that means all they lose is a little pride when they have to drop their half-finished projects, fuck 'em, I'm out to get a raise here.
