Substitute "OCD" for "sociopathy" and they're not that different, except Monk didn't pretend that you wanted to see the sad, pathetic lives of the supporting cast in the absence of Tony Shalhoub's involvement with them. This show hasn't aged well. It's got the same problems as most other police procedurals - large, mostly dull cast with most of the women too emotional to be that interesting and everyone becomes stupid when the plot requires it. The "brilliant" serial killers are only intelligent compared to the bumbling police. Hall really carried this show and was the only actor worth watching. Season one had the fun of an overarching mystery including forming his "code" and discovering his missing brother. The writers occasionally tried for some metaphors like the cop named Angel who stood by Dexter but it never really took. Angel mostly hangs around pining over his divorced wife instead of offering moral guidance which is unfortunately taken up by Rita/kids. Deb's a more realistic moral grounding for Dexter but she has nothing to work with other than being a typical single cop in her 30s who falls for the wrong guys. Season 2 took a nosedive as there was more and more emphasis on Rita and children and the personal lives of the cast and less on the amusing interludes between him and his victims. I stopped at the end of season 2.
Still worth watching? If you're bored. It was probably fine compared to what else was out there at the time but there's a lot better TV out there now. If you stop at the end of season 1 you've probably seen the best the show has to offer. |
