Since I've deleted a bunch of social media accounts, I figured it was time to prune my IFTTT recipes. IFTTT has been touted by productivity sites like Lifehacker forever but unlike other apps/products they recommend it's only 70% more useless than they claim instead of 99%. It's helpful for weather notifications, logging locations automatically in spreadsheets, etc. I haven't been on the site in forever and they've completely redesigned it to make it as hard to navigate as possible.
- The Recipes have now been renamed "applets" for no good reason.
- The site design is awful. Recipes are listed in listed in rows of 3 in huge blocks (flat coloring because gradients would be passe) in a giant font that takes up way too much space. There's no way to rearrange this into a text list or at least make the images smaller so you can see 5 in a row.
- The recommendation system is shit. This may have been the case before it's even more obvious since they're showing you less. I have always used Android stuff. Why are you recommending recipes using iOS Contacts?
- Deleting anything has become a giant pain. You have to go to your recipes where they're laid in those huge ass color blocks. Then you have to click on the applet. Then you have to click on the cog wheel to change settings for it. Then underneath the settings is "Delete" in small red letters. One recipe I tried deleting didn't even have that. Intuitive.
- If you browse a certain site's recipes, there's no way to rearrange them by the number of people using them or what's new. Popular ones tend to be higher up but it's not consistent - a recipe used by 22K people will be next to one used by 91 with no obvious reason as to why.
- Forced notifications and "tutorials" that won't let you do anything until you click "OK" or "Got it" and fuckin' Android needs to stop this too.
Look, I get that everyone's leery of Linux-style usability/aesthetic problems with too many options. And maybe it's because I'm a *nix user but the pendulum has swung way too far in the other direction. I fucking hate how the Zuckerberg ethos of taking away almost all options is better than hiding them because users are dumb and don't care about 99% of them anyway. But people making or using IFTTT recipes are fairly tech-savvy and no amount of dumbing down will make this usable for the Midwestern Grandma who's happily posting pictures of her dog on the Applebee's Facebook page. |
