Review ideas: Great engine, subpar gameplay by still should be studying 08/12/2004, 4:44pm PDT
Which games do you all remember, with promising engines, groundbreaking concepts, impeccable art/aurals, but ultimately crapass gameplay?

System shock 3--spent two hours repairing an elevator.
Every Dragon Warrior--I love how the japanese trip over their own shadows for a chance to fight half a day for a bamboo pole and a shirt.
Syndicate--did we even have to pretend we're taxing cities and doing research? Did *anything* besides the lasers help out at the Atlantis Accelerator?
Masters of Orion 2--again, Why TF with all that research? It's not like seasoned gamers don't know exactly which techs to go straight for and muchkin out. Even in Fallout, the untouchable, half the perks were completely useless. If it's not combat enhancement then it's smooth-talking and charisma. I'm also tempted to bunch X-Com with the 'is this research button just for show' game engines. It's pretty much alien corpses or nothing.

In fact every game made before 1997 except maybe Diablo. And bully if that didn't come out after 1997. And the Civ/alpha centauri games. Gameplay engine design and balance is only awesome if you don't notice it. Who knew Miyamoto wasn't just smoking up mushrooms like the rest of Japanese designers?

When I first played FFX I laughed at how they dropped all pretense of 'exploring' and instead just gave you lush, eye-candy maps to look at, with LINEAR paths going from SOUTH DIRECTLY NORTH where there's another cutscene. They might as well have taken out the whole idea of "walking" and instead gave us an interactive Progress Quest with pretty cutscenes every, I dunno, 3 character lvls' worth of advancement.

Sidenotes: In FFX, you learn that the Japanese version of "we hate the towelhead al-bhed" racism is as close-to-home as "we hate koreans" cauz that's what rikku looked like. Nevermind that entire southern japanese townships are genetically korean. I can't wait til FF12 when they "address racial issues".

When I found out that FF8 scaled enemy lvls to your own, I slapped my head and knew that I MUST PLAY that game. A game where you're actually competing against a like-paced computer for numerical advantage in the form of stolen spells.
