Masters of Orion 2--again, Why TF with all that research? It's not like seasoned gamers don't know exactly which techs to go straight for and muchkin out. Even in Fallout, the untouchable, half the perks were completely useless. If it's not combat enhancement then it's smooth-talking and charisma. I'm also tempted to bunch X-Com with the 'is this research button just for show' game engines. It's pretty much alien corpses or nothing.
Fully disagreeing with the MOO2 tech tree complaint. The money stuff is important so you can build the giant Death Star ships, and all the way up the tech tree if you get behind your opponent a little ways you're completely fucked, unless a random encounter fucks them up or you make up for the research with something else. I'd say MOO2 was amazingly well-balanced in this department, and nothing was more fun then getting shields while your opponent still had lasers and fucking up a few of his ship squads with total impunity... until (d'oh!) he got something that could break through and all that money you spent on tech was wasted because he was spending it on ships that can now kill you.
I assume you left out Doom3 because it was too obvious? |
