Almost every FPS falls into this category. It's like they threw a metric ton of cash into development, but the only way to recoup it all is it license it to other dreamy-eyed game companies. It wouldn't hurt for the gaming press to stop describing engine license deals like people passing hot potatoes.
Exceptions, lesee...Half-life, of course; JK barely, for its spiffy level design; and, uh, Doom 3 and Metroid if you count reading paragraphs in the dark as "story progression". It would have been more efficient for the gamers to download a Doom 3 demo and just read a story transcript from gamefaqs (both soon-to-be released, I'm sure). Heck, Metroid and Suffering got the mood down better than Doom 3 did, and without a story it's all that's left to count. |
