The word on the street with Uber is that their original crop of engineers wasn't that good. Once they got more money and discipline, they hired some better people, but the old crop of people often made it into management or lingered as tech leads and so forth. Not an ideal place to work for an engineer.

They are rule-breakers. In 2016, they kept their self-driving car program running even after it ran a red-light and California sent them a cease-and-desist letter. In 2014, at a dinner party, one of their execs threatened to dig up dirt on journalists who covered Uber negatively. And of course their whole business is based on bending or breaking taxi laws, then cajoling or threatening local authorities to legalize Uber after the fact.

Most SV companies are painfully idealistic and painfully politically correct. For example, look the extremely PC Twitter feed of Jack Dorsey, founder of Twitter. Pretty much every big company has explicit diversity targets that they must hit-- if necessary, by hiring women or minorities who aren't as good as the white males they would have otherwise hired. Google even has seminars about micro-aggressions and other fourth-wave feminist topics. I would say it's never been a better time to be a woman engineer in SV (and I know several).

I'm sure there will be a big shakeup at Uber as a result of this blog. They will fire her boss who asked her out (unless he's related to Someone Important). They will clean out the HR department (HR people are always coming or going anyway). They will make sure that the next time they buy leather jackets, they buy them for the women too. Etc. etc. Uber will still be a shitty place to work, but differently shitty. And still not typical of SV.
