The download noise is the same on the Wii-U. Yeah, it's pretty irritating. Also irritating was spending 4 hours downloading Zelda, and then another hour installing it and downloading/installing a huge day zero update.
About Zelda, I've only played it for about 2 hours, BUT:
- PRO: they ditched the 40-minute unskippable hand-holding tutorial of past games and instead confine you to a small room for 30 seconds to orient you to the bare minimum, then you're dumped into the open world. Here's a quest marker, follow it or don't, have fun. They trust you to just wander around and push buttons and explore and experiment. Nice!
- PRO: Sneaking up on goblin camps. And goblins. Holy shit, goblins go to sleep at night so you can shank them. There's a field you can bait goblins into and light it on fire. And a little tree fort with a drawbridge you can sneak onto.
- PRO: Even though there's a billion little collectable items, you only get an interrupting pop-up the first time you encounter them. Every time after that it's just a quick pickup. No harvesting animation or progress bar, no popup to close every single time.
- PRO: SPIDERMAN. Being able to climb on everything
- PRO: I'm digging overworld music being absent and instead having lots of ambient environment noise.
- PRO: Wandering around randomly stumbling on secrets and secret bosses
- CON: I knew this was going to annoy me all the way back from the first previews, but breakable weapons and having to switch between them. Sure, enemies drop weapons like candy, but still.
- CON: They clearly reworked the interface to accommodate Nintendo BITCH owners because all of the things that should have been on the Wii-U's tablet interface are now a standard options menu on the TV. The Wii-U tablet isn't used at all. How hard would it have been for them to just have two different interfaces for each console? Why can't I see a fucking map on my tablet?
- CON: Run is B and jump is X (or A and Y for non-Nintendo controllers), making a running jump unnecessarily difficult. You do continue to run for a few paces after releasing run, so you can do a running jump with a quick transition so I guess I'll have to get used to it.
- UNKNOWN: It's a super giant open world, even the small portion I'm confined to right now, and there's big expanses with not much, but so far it isn't wearing on me and I actually feel like I'm exploring. We'll see if I hate it by the end or not.
