It fucking annoys me that this is the best Persona game by Worm 04/16/2017, 11:06am PDT
Persona to me is a lot like GTA where everyone ignores anything prior to GTA3 and when they talk about it they're really talking about GTA3 style games. I'm in that camp since I've just never played P1 or P2.

Rather than cheesing out mob boundaries and angling around to corners so you get ambush attacks on enemy shadows the whole thing is a sort of finicky cover stealth system. Sometimes it's annoying when your takedown marker disappears and leaves you not getting your ambush but it's ultimately a lot less frustrating than having to remember the exact length of your Katana.

Also the game has went further in the direction of P4 and has premade dungeons that aren't grid based so they feel more like the levels out of a stealth game rather than feeling like a tileset dungeon. There is an optional random dungeon but it's kind of simplistic and never really gets back to that feeling of Tartarus from P3, but none of that matters since P5 is just fucking better in all regards.

While the dungeon changes are a bit of a loss to me personally I can't actually say I'll ever miss grinding for gold shadows there's even an easy to get item that makes rares spawn more often now. The writing is much stronger and more believable, rather than having some Evangelion plot like P3 or some Scooby Doo mystery like P4, Persona 5 has your characters actually using their powers to help people and right wrongs, which is just endlessly more engaging than any of the previous games. This theme goes through pretty much every social link as well and social links are more enjoyable since pretty much all of them provide you with tangible benefits to gameplay.

They also brought back the negotiation system from the earlier games and replace all shadows with persona, so you actually don't need to consult a FAQs and rely on some bullshit roulette since you can just keep capturing Persona each time you dip into a dungeon. I liked Persona 3 and Persona 4 but in the end I feel like this is the first game where the framing of the powers actually fits the slice of life style of the game, rather than saving the city or rescuing your friend from a murder plot you're making the CEO of McDonalds confess to unfair labor practices so you trend more on twitter, and it just works really well.
