Yeah this game sure lets you grind. But see you don't have to. I never did. by Roop 04/17/2017, 11:06am PDT
I am currently in one of the "Top 3" ships in the game, fully engineered, nothing left to grind and I always just screw around mainly. Since I did this early on, when bounties gave you rep, I'm sort of grandfathered in with more rank then normal, but I did have to rely on missions at the end. I met a player in a Corvette like mine who was Mostly Harmless, and I couldn't believe it. We were all in the station waiting for the community goal to end, so this guys explaining he just decided when he was going to try combat he was going to do it in the best ship. So he googled how to grind rank and went at it. Madness. It was using this loophole this patch closed, stacking data delivery missions in a far out system by itself so you'd have to travel real far to only one station, and turn it all in at once. You do this hundreds of times.

So I said fuck that after trying it once. I just figured I'd not sweat it, slowly get rank from missions normally and go about my business. I had my Fer De Lance and that's all I needed. I had another rank to go, had accumulated enough wealth I got tempted, started thinking about grinding somehow for a big ship. I could have said fuck it and just bought an Anaconda. Many players think it's the superior of the three ships. It's the all-rounder, the Clipper is a fat shielded hauler, and the Corvette is the fighter. Wanting that Corvette, I was hanging around earth, trying out the new passenger missions, and saw it gave good rep. I figured out I was gaining lots of rep just by how many missions I was turning in per hour. Earth is nice because everybody already loved me from hanging around there last year, and everybody's a Fed. I'd grab as many short range passengers I knew I could stand, and haul 'em around. Then I'd head back, hop in my Fer De Lance and go killin.' I was getting close to Elite, and that gets you access to a nice star system, so I wanted it. When I felt like killin, I'd find combat zones instead of bounty hunting, because you get less pay but you kill more, and I'd concentrate on finding the elite ships. Other than paying attention to the level of the npcs, I didn't grind rank because I still bounty hunt and hit war zones a lot.

The missions were giving me materials, and I was kinda enjoying passenger missions. This made engineering easier probably.

Honestly, I think my Fer De Lance (I could never sell it or it's modules) is probably the best ship, the ship of choice for pvp, and it's very easy to buy.

When I decided I loved the railguns on it and wanted the special ones you can buy if you do Powerplay, my brain started to boil with it. I'd just log in and out of the station and haul the propaganda. You can wait for free or buy yourself enough to haul the crap. The minimum was okay I suppose. I'd space truck for a bit then have time to find something else to do. You do it long enough is really what gets you the items, and hauling the minimum amount, not too bad. It's not a grind if it's pretty short and you're done really. I did this twice for two different powers, never understood what the fuck was going on, got my shit and had enough. But there are players, actual crazy people I'm thinking, they are into it. Not grinding, understanding it and doing different things... I dunno.

The playerbase is filled with crazy people. Like the explorers. Crazy people, lots of them. But then the guys with VR headsets who aren't insane, just out not-grinding, checking out the sights.

I don't have VR, so that's probably when I'd try deep space exploring. I wouldn't be playing if I didn't enjoy the combat, when I'm out of ammo is just the right burst where it stops being a grind, and I like configuring the different ships and experimenting with them. I'm not doing them now but I enjoyed doing those passengers missions out of Sol, saw it in so many constellations, very cool. I like being intimate with our stellar neighborhood in my head.
