...from a gameplay perspective.
Saint's Row 3 is the single greatest GTA clone ever made, and I appreciate it that much more after playing Saint's Row 4. GoH is not even in the same genre as SR3, it's a 3D platformer collect-a-thon and a damn good one, too!
First of all, the flight system is way better than the flying squirrel one from SR4. It's basically the wing cap from Mario 64 and requires some level of technique to maneuver effectively. And a big plus is this is the first SR game that lets you use the mouse for flight control instead of WASD. I've been looking for years to find a good barnstorming flight game with a strong sense of speed, who'd have thought it would be a Saint's Row game?
SR4 feels more like a mod than a sequel, in part because the map isn't designed around its matrix-y movement system. Steelport is built with cars in mind so it's a wide and mostly flat map. Suddenly give the player superhero leaping abilities and pretty much everywhere (except downtown with its skyscrapers) becomes automatically boring. In GoH, New Hades is specifically built vertically with lots of tunnels and canyons everywhere for crazy flight maneuvers.
In SR3, everything was built around emergent mayhem and it had the enemy types to make it happen like Brutes that sent people and vehicles flying, Helicopter Snipers that could come from anywhere, and VTOL jets that can be shot out of the sky and land to explosive effect, plus different gangs with different attack styles depending on the region of the game you're in.
In SR4 all you had were a huge variety of aliens who stood still and shot at you, in varying flavors of bullet sponges, and any time you want you could just leap into the sky and escape like it's nothing. GoH brings back brutes and snipers and puts several twists on them so they can give chase when you try flying away to safety. Plus the demon cops drive monster trucks which leads to all manner of insane Blues Brothers pileups.
Now make no mistake, GoH barely has any story, is ridiculously short (as in saving right after the tutorial tells me I'm 7% complete), Hell doesn't make for a colorful pleasing playground like SR3 Steelport, and active combat powers still seem OP. All that said, I'm having way more fun with it than 4, which wore out its welcome once I'd scooped up the majority of the clusters. GoH I'm probably going to play a second time on Hard as Kinsie. |
