Everyone should try it. Rent a Switch or Wii U if you have to. Do they still rent consoles? Whatever. As much as I like Zelda, I wasn't that hyped about this because of the open world, crafting, weapon breaking, and deemphasis of big bosses and dungeons. I was afraid they were incorporating all of the worst modern trends in games to try and reinvent it. And then the next one would be a cover shooter. Instead, they turned out something so goddamn good it's going to be copied a million times over.
The sense of exploration and discovery is amazing. Even just finding Korok seeds and solving the simple puzzles, like moving a rock or solving one of those magnetic block puzzles, I couldn't stop. It was weirdly compulsive. I spent the time to find 441 seeds and unlocked every inventory slot. At over 100 hours in, there were still parts of the map I hadn't explored and I was stumbling across new shrines. I still haven't found all of the shrines. I don't even know where to look anymore, and I'm pretty sure I've completed every side quest. I beat the game today at 128 hours and 61% of the map explored. Jesus Christ.
I also didn't hate the crafting. Other games force you to buy and/or "learn" recipes, and you can't craft anything if you haven't learned it even if you, the player, already know what the ingredients are. And you're forbidden from crafting anything unless you have exactly the right ingredients, so if you're missing something you have to go trek halfway round the world and grind for ingredients and then run back to a crafting station. Zelda just lets you toss shit into a pot. Anything. All things. Even if you fuck it up, it'll still restore half a heart. Nothing is wasted, everything you craft has SOME utility. There's formal recipes you can find, but completely unrequired. My only two gripes are I wish it catalogued recipes you cooked (I know you can inspect a prepared dish for the ingredient list), and navigating the inventory menu can be a little annoying.
Breaking weapons still sucks. It'd be fine if they had more durability. I did grow to appreciate having to switch weapons, though. Early on I ignored polearms and didn't like them, but I eventually liked them a lot because of their range and charge attack. Same thing with large two-handed weapons. Everything just needed to not break so often.
I'd describe combat as Dark Souls Lite. You can see its influence. It's still Zelda hack 'n slash, but enemies can and will clobber you for your entire health bar if you just endlessly attack. Enemies in Zelda are now actually dangerous, however they don't require precision timing and extreme patience. They do have a surprising amount of variety and their attacks and behaviors.
If I had to really criticize, I'd say I wish there were more enemy variety and the bosses were more difficult. Bosses I think could have been pretty good fights, it's just they took too much damage so the fight was over before you could really get into it. I'm willing to spot them enemy variety if they carry over all of the enemies in this one into the next and add equally as many new enemies.
I'd love to see them take everything from this game, add traditional large Zelda dungeons with traditional bosses, drop flurry rush, and add enemies that require a liiiiiitle bit more strategy. And drop rain effects. Can't do SHIT when it's raining.
Wanna know how great this game is? At 128 hours I've only found 441 korok seeds. I struggled to find the last 10 or 15, and I know where I can find maybe 2 or 3 more. There's 900 total. Realistically, it'd probably take over 200 hours to find them all. What's your reward for finding them all?
A piece of shit. A literal piece of shit. Hundreds of hours of exhaustive exploration, Link finally uncovers the 900th Korok seed, runs across hills and rivers and mountains like he found the golden ticket, holds out his hand to the NPC for cash and prizes, and he just shits right into it. It's like the exact opposite of Jerry's experience playing Super Mario Bros. |
