Tillerson Adams ..............................................................14735 Main Street ..............................................................Upper Marlboro, MD 20774 Your Honor: I am writing you today because apparently the office of the Jury Commissioner for Prince George's County seems to have a clear inability to understand common English I have been summoned for Jury Duty. As the enclosure shows, I wrote to the Prince George's County Jury Commissioner's office to request permission to arrive late, as the combined public schedules of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) and Prince Georges County Transit (The Bus) do not make it possible for me to arrive at the court house in Upper Marlboro by 7:30. It is, however, possible for me to arrive by 7:45. Instead of issuing me permission to arrive late, the office of the Jury Commissioner issues me a postponement - which it incorrectly claims I asked for. And this postponement doesn't even solve the problem. If they issue me a new summons requiring me to be in the Jury Office by 7:30, the postponement doesn't do a damn thing to help me. I'm still unable to arrive before 7:45. Changing the date I am forced to appear for Jury Duty does not make a bit of difference, the bus schedule is the same Monday through Friday. This is exactly the reason why I wrote and asked for a written order allowing me to be late because I knew exactly what would happen based upon prior incidents of incompetence in the courthouse personnel: I'd call, ask for permission to arrive 15 minutes late, out of courtesy due to my impossibility to arrive on time it would be granted, then when I arrived late, nobody would be able to remember having given me permission to be late, and the court would find me in contempt. And I do not particularly find being sent to jail an attractive prospect, which is the only reason I'm showing up. If I sound paranoid you're 100% correct. Since the primary purpose of the jury office is first and foremost to violate the civil rights of summoned jurors such as myself, I do not trust them for anything not in writing. I would like to ask for one of three things, either someone call them and have them issue me a summons that allows me to arrive at 7:45, to issue me a regular 7:30 summons along with a signed written excuse allowing me to arrive at the building by 7:45, or in the alternative, could you issue me an ex-parte order to the Jury Commissioner allowing me to arrive to the building for jury duty by 7:45. Given that it is not possible for me to reach the Jury Office by 7:30, causes them no injury, and my failure to arrive on time without such an order puts me in real, conceivable jeopardy of punishment for contempt, I think such an order would be reasonable. In the alternative, if it is absolutely mandatory I be in the Jury office by 7:30 I have no problem if the county chooses to provide free transportation for me and my power wheelchair to the courthouse. (Public transit allows wheelchair passengers free transportation.) Again, let me reiterate. I do not need a postponement and it does not solve the problem; all this new postponement does is kick the can down the road. I need either to be granted a delay from 7:30 to the next available The Bus arrival (which is 7:45), or to have the county provide me and my wheelchair alternative transportation, at its option.
