What I am or what I do is completely irrelevant to the situation. Why should the county have the right to violate my rights simply because they don't want to pay at least minimum wage? Exactly how and why does their interest in underpaying me and other jurors override my right not to be subjected to involuntary servitude? I have done nothing to deserve this treatment, I am a law abiding citizen, not a criminal. Yet I am forced to show up despite the fact they intentionally exclude volunteers.
So fine, if they have a problem getting people to do this and have to dragoon them to show up, why is it they can't even pay minimum wage? In this case all of the hardship and sacrifice of jury service is imposed on the juror exclusively. Why is the court, which has much more resources, seemingly unable to absorb any part of this burden? Why is the court's need for cheap people allowed to override my civil rights?
No private employer or even the County itself would be allowed to pull this sort of stunt publicly and get away with it. Why and how is jury service of a category of work that it is worth less than some clerk slinging hot dogs at a 7-11 or even the clerks in the Jury Office itself, who I'm sure make more than $10.25 an hour.
