Graphics:
Classic sprites are still detailed and fluid considering their age. The modern facelift from 2008’s HD Remix looks nice, but makes the lack of animation frames more noticeable.
The Sydney Morning Herald's Tim Biggs wrote:
Some won't dig the clean presentation — since the game retains the jerky animation of the original it can be a bit incongruous — but thankfully the option is there to revert to the 25-year-old graphical style and sound, which are awesome in their own right.
Worthplaying's Brian Dumlao wrote:
The graphics remain the same, so the HD mode gives you the Udon comic illustrations while still retaining the limited movements of the original. It works well for gameplay, since the timing remains near-perfect, but the background looks stiff.
ZTGD's Ken McKown wrote:
The new visual style is very reminiscent of the 360/PS3 HD re-release from 2008. The new overlay is gorgeous in still shots, but feels a little weird in motion due to keeping the original animation.
Nintendo Life's Damien McFerran wrote:
Ultra Street Fighter II uses the updated HD visuals created for the aforementioned HD Remix in an effort to bring things up to modern standards. Created by respected studio UDON, these pin-sharp designs capture the spirit of the original sprites, but as is often the case when upgrading existing imagery something's not quite right. The animation remains largely untouched, which gives the fighters a strange cardboard cut-out feel.
The redrawn fighters in Ultra Street Fighter II don't move like the ghost girl from Stir of Echoes because they're TOO faithful to the original animations, because Capcom didn't want to mess with the timing of moves by inserting any new frames. They move like they do because the Canadian comic book company hired to trace over the old frames wasn't able to make one flow smoothly into the next. (Who can blame them? Capcom's '90s arcade division was a windowless sweatshop staffed by lifelong pixel artists at the peak of their powers; Udon needed work and wasn't afraid to bid aggressively for it.) For some reason, out of all the stupid shit being said about Ultra Street Fighter II, this is the thing that gets under my skin the most. I think because it suggests the original was a lot worse than we think we remember it, like all old things (boo old things, get rid of them, buy them again). There's a fine line between everybody regurgitating the same press kit and good old-fashioned gaslighting.
I'm also not a fan of considering the recommended retail price when scoring a game, though I understand reasonable people may disagree on that point. (Good games are worth as much or as little as you can afford to pay. They're what piracy is for. Bad games are worthless, obviously.) |
