| Cards Against Humanity was the Sex & the City of table games: a terrible product, but an invaluable, instant tell for awful people to avoid.
Enter the new game they've all moved on to: Secret Hitler. You might remember it as that game the makers sent to every Senator when Trump was elected as a It's just another Mafia/Werewolf type game where a large group of players have a minority of "evil" players who must be flushed out before they cause a certain number of votes to go their way, just like Mafia, Werewolf, and The Resistance before it. And it ultimately sucks for the same reason: There's always one or two people on the good team who can remember everything, lay out the exact optimal moves, and instantly deduce who the hidden evil players are in X votes. At that point you either go along with everything they say and essentially let them play the game for you and everyone else, or you're obviously the evil team and are voted out. Even if the good team doesn't have a Sherlock Holmes on it, the game still sucks because then it becomes the DotA of board games: one bad player disproportionally dragging down your team. All the evil team has to do is fool one good team player so if they get a dummy, they've lost (I've seen Resistance games where a good team player failed a mission because he "didn't want everyone to know he was on the good team"). So you either let one dummy throw the game or you hand total control over to your group's Rainman and let him run everything. Fuck though this game is hugely popular now and is probably the worst thing about Trump being elected. . |
