That's exactly what it is.

I haven't played it myself but they seem to enjoy it a lot. One thing to keep in mind is that if you die you don't wait until the end of the match to queue up and join the next match, you pretty much drop in immediately. So that "30 minutes to die unexpectedly" aspect makes it suspenseful, but not as frustrating as it sounds.

Part of the reason people like it, I think, is that its spectator mode makes it a nicely watchable e-sport and these kids looooove watching other people play games on their other monitor while they work.
